Bona Classic: Waterborne Primer for Wooden Floors

What is Bona Classic?

Bona Classic is a one-component waterborne acrylic primer, specifically developed for wooden and parquet floors. This primer provides an excellent base for floors that are to be finished with Bona waterborne topcoat products. Bona Classic creates a well-filled surface, reducing the risk of edge bonding, particularly in end grain, softwood plank floors, and hardwood floors with underfloor heating. Thanks to its unique formulation, Bona Classic is suitable for all Bona waterborne topcoats and ensures a smooth, even finish.

How the product works

Bona Classic acts as a base layer that prepares the floor for further finishing with Bona’s waterborne lacquers. The primer forms a solid foundation by filling the wood and simultaneously providing a protective layer. The primer is easy to apply using a Bona primer roller, evenly spreading the product over the floor with smooth movements. Under normal room temperatures (20°C and 60% relative humidity), Bona Classic’s drying time is 1 to 2 hours. The high solids content of about 35% contributes to the product’s effectiveness and ensures excellent adhesion for the topcoat.

Benefits and properties

Bona Classic offers several benefits for both professional and DIY users. It is suitable for use under all Bona waterborne topcoats, ensuring versatility. It reduces the risk of edge bonding, which is especially useful for end grain, softwood, and floors with underfloor heating. Bona Classic has a high solids content of around 35%, providing a well-filled surface. The primer is environmentally friendly with a maximum VOC content of 30 g/liter and can be diluted with Bona Retarder for extended working time. The product is non-hazardous, meaning it contains no harmful substances.

Instructions for use

Before applying Bona Classic, the floor must be sanded down to bare wood, dry, and free of sanding dust, oil, wax, and other contaminants. Use the Bona FlexiSand with Bona Power Drive for optimal sanding results. Shake the lacquer well before use and apply evenly with a Bona waterborne lacquer roller. Avoid puddles and build-ups. After 1-2 hours of drying time, the next coat can be applied. For a smooth surface, it is recommended to lightly sand raised wood fibers with the Bona Scrad system. Keep the room temperature above 13°C during application and drying.

Maintenance and tips

When using Bona Classic, it is important to shake the primer well before use and apply it evenly to ensure a perfect result. Clean the tools immediately after use with water; dried material can be removed with acetone. The product should be stored frost-free at temperatures between +5°C and +25°C. The shelf life is at least one year in an unopened container. Residues and empty cans should be disposed of according to local regulations. Always store the primer in its original packaging and follow the safety instructions on the label.
